Strawberries will ‘last forever’ for those that use ‘game-changing’ storage tip

Strawberries are expensive and seasonal, so storing them correctly is important to reduce food waste.

British strawberries are delicious and sweet but need to be consumed within a couple of days of buying them as they are one of many berries that start to deteriorate quickly, going mushy and mouldy.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, one woman claimed that the key to storing strawberries the best is by keeping them in a glass jar.

Lloret Hodgson said: “Does anyone put strawberries in a glass jar? Saw this post elsewhere, they last forever.

“These ones, no word of a lie, are over three weeks old from the superstore.

“I’m lucky if I get them to last five days before they start to turn when I buy them from there. I don’t know who else knows this trick but if you don’t, you’re welcome.”

For this method, transfer unwashed strawberries into a glass food storage container or jar and make sure it’s sealed tight.

Taking to the comments section, group members were big fans of this storage tip – and many had tested it out for themselves.

Another method many recommend to extend the shelf life of strawberries is to soak them in a vinegar solution.

It involves placing strawberries in a water bath made with one part white vinegar and three parts water, draining them, and then drying them as thoroughly as possible. 

Some suggest drying them in a salad spinner lined with paper towels for added insurance that they would get dry.

Once dried, transfer the strawberries into a paper towel-lined container, loosely place the lid on, and pop them in the fridge.
