Best place to store onions to keep them edible for 6 months
Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Sarah Taylor, food safety expert at High Speed Training about the best storage locations for various items of food.
When it comes to onions, she said: “Onions are a staple of many food dishes and are always useful to have in the house. For this reason, it’s beneficial to keep them for as long as possible to avoid unnecessary extra purchases.”
As for the best location to store onions, Sarah revealed: “Onions are best stored in a dry, dark place, such as a cupboard or drawer.”
But there are other places they can be stored, she explained: “One option is to store them in a pair of unused tights. Simply cut the legs off and add an onion to the foot before tying a knot and adding another onion above this. You can then hang these up in the chosen dry, dark space and simply untie the knot to retrieve an onion.
“Alternatively, if your onions come in a red mesh sack, you can hang this up. Onions kept in the correct conditions can last for months,” she added.
“If you’re limited in your choice of available dark spots, onions can be stored in a bowl on the countertop but should be removed from their plastic packaging to help the air circulate around them.
“Onions should also not be kept near other items of fruit or veg, such as potatoes. This is because many fruit and vegetables, like onions and potatoes, give off gases as they ripen. Storing ripening produce together will cause them to ripen and rot much quicker than if you store them separately,” Sarah continued.

“You should also avoid storing whole onions in the fridge. This is because onions absorb the moisture around them, so storing them in the fridge runs the risk of them becoming soft and mushy, whilst storing in a cool, dark place will ensure they’re crisp and fresh.
“However chopped onions can be safely stored in the fridge. To do this, chop them up and add the onion to a freezer bag. If you’re using them in the near future, they can be stored in the fridge, or they can also be frozen for longer periods of time.
“With the optimal storage conditions, onions can last 6 months or more, although produce is better when fresher, so try to use them within a month,” Sarah said.
