Jars of pasta sauce are widely available to buy in supermarkets but they’re not always a cost-effective option – particularly when it comes to brands.
Even the most popular labelled items have risen in price beyond what many households can afford to pay, forcing Britons to find alternatives.
Finding cheaper options is one way to cut costs, but often, the best flavours come from homemade sauces.
And savvy TikTok star Kenny Metham (@thekennystory) has come up with the perfect recipe for people looking to find a cheaper sauce for their pasta dishes.
He claimed that the affordable formula is a close dupe for the Lloyd Grossman Bolognese Pasta Sauce (660g), which retails for £4.50 at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons.

In a video shared on his profile, the Leed-based content creator said: “£4.50 for pasta sauce is criminal…I know we are in a cost-of-living crisis but honestly, you guys can make this at home.”
He warned viewers that “it’s not as pretty” or “refined” but it does the job and is “cheap as chips to make”.
The bolognese sauce dupe is made from a handful of vegetables and seasoning, using tomatoes and carrots as the base of the dish.

Ingredients
- One beef tomato
- Eight closed-cup mushrooms
- Two carrots, rated
- Oil
- Salt and pepper
- Onion powder
- Garlic granules
- Mixed Italian herbs
- One tin of chopped tomatoes
- Chilli flakes
Start by dicing one large fresh tomato, eight regular mushrooms and grating two carrots. These can be chopped to size depending on the desired texture of the sauce.
Coat a large frying pan with some oil and add the chopped tomatoes followed by the salt, pepper, herbs, onion, garlic, and chilli flakes.
No specific quantities are required for this, they should just be measured to taste.
Next, add in the mushrooms and carrots then mix well before pouring in a tin of chopped tomatoes and 200ml of water.
Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 25 minutes. Blend to consistency of choice to create a smooth sauce, then serve, and enjoy.
Kenny claimed that the sauce is “packed full of veggies”, “tastes really good”, and will save Britons “so much money” if they swap it for costly branded products.
