Make a ‘healthier’ version of the iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte at home
The Pumpkin Spice Latte, or PSL, is a firm favourite among coffee drinkers.
The autumnal beverage from Starbucks is the perfect drink for those looking for a warming, wintery treat.
Since PSL season began last month, the coffee chain has already seen a flurry of interest from coffee lovers.
Data collected from industry data platform Alt Index revealed an estimated 19,306 people downloaded Starbucks’ mobile app on a daily basis and the company saw a 25.4 percent increase in downloads over the whole of September 2023.
A spokesperson for Alt Index said: “The popularity of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte has proven to be a game-changer in the coffee industry.

“As the leaves change colour and the air becomes crisper, the iconic drink has become synonymous with the arrival of autumn, with recent data highlighting a significant change in the consumer habits of coffee drinkers come autumn.”
However, the iconic drink isn’t the healthiest beverage and should be enjoyed in moderation.
According to Starbucks UK’s nutrition and allergy guide, a Tall PSL with whole milk contains 294 calories and 29.8g of sugar.
A Grande PSL with whole milk contains 383 calories and just shy of 40g of sugar (39.1g).
Qualified nutritionist and health expert Kristen Stavridis told Alt Index how people can make their own “healthier” version of the PSL at home.

She said: “I make a PSL at home myself. I just use unsweetened almond or oat milk. I actually bought pumpkin spice on Amazon or you can make it yourself if you look it up online.
“I then use something like Stevia or a little bit of honey, which helps to sweeten the coffee.
“I’ll mix that with some decaf coffee and a non-dairy cream. It’s absolutely delicious, free compared to the shop prices and saves time.
“You can definitely make these at home and control what’s going into them, like artificial stuff. Plant based milk, a little bit of coffee, non-dairy creamer – it’s a good mix.”
Those wishing to enjoy the iconic PSL from Starbucks with a little fewer calories can do so by making milk substitutes or choosing a smaller size.
A Tall PSL with almond drink contains 222 calories while a Short PSL with almond drink contains just 150 calories.
A Short PSL with whole milk contains 186 calories while a short PSL with skimmed milk contains 160 calories.
