Jamie Oliver shares top tip for poached eggs – ‘gorgeous’ every time
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and what better way to start the day than poached eggs on toast?
You may have been making this tasty dish for years, but superstar chef Jamie Oliver has a hack that will take your poached eggs from pleasant to perfect.
In a YouTube video entitled ‘How to Make Perfect Poached Eggs – Three Ways’, Jamie told budding chefs how they can enjoy “super, silky, gorgeous eggs every time”.
He shared an important tip: “The only way to poach the perfect egg is if you have really, really fresh eggs – end of story.”
But how do you know that an egg is fresh? Jamie revealed: “When it gets to shopping, don’t go to the front, go to the back and get your eggs.”

He explained that the eggs at the back are “going to be the freshest ones”.
Once you’ve got your fresh eggs, the celeb chef instructed to bring a saucepan of water to the boil (meaning there are bubbles). Then, take it off the heat so the bubbles subside.
Jamie made an important distinction between boiling and poaching. Boiling will “smash the eggs all around”, whereas poaching is more “gentle”. Make sure the water is simmering.

For a “softish egg”, cook for around three minutes. Take it out and it should feel like a “lovely, fresh, springy mozarella”.
Plate up your egg on a nice piece of toast. Add some avocado for an added creamy flavour. Alternatively, add a few slices of smoked salmon.
