Cook baked potatoes that are always perfectly fluffy and tender in 10 minutes
Adored by many, jacket potatoes are a British classic meal. However, many people are put off making them with how long they take to cook in the oven.
Jacket potatoes typically take around 30 minutes to one house to cook in the oven – and some can even take more time than that.
Luckily Kathryn Doherty, a cookbook author and owner of Family Food On The Table blog has shared her recipe for baked potatoes, claiming that they come out “perfect every time” with this method.
Rather than using the oven or even an air fryer to cook jacket potatoes, Kathryn uses the microwave.
She said: “Microwave baked potatoes come out perfectly fluffy and tender every time – and only take about 10 minutes.”

Fluffy potatoes usually come in larger sizes and are the best for conjuring up that lovely light consistency you want from a jacket potato.
Supermarkets usually stock “baking potatoes” but if you’re seeking out a specific type then Maris Piper or Kind Edwards are good choices.
Method
1. The first step is to start by scrubbing the potatoes and poking each of them five to six times with a fork. Kathryn said that she does this “a few times on each side”. Place potatoes directly onto the microwave plate afterwards.
2. The next step is to cook the potato in the microwave. The exact timing will depend on your microwave power, potato size and the number of potatoes.

For two medium-sized russet potatoes start with 10 to 11 minutes, for four medium-sized potatoes start with 15 to 16 minutes and for a single potato, start with five to six minutes.
If the potatoes are especially large, they’ll likely need an extra couple of minutes of microwave time. Just put them back in the microwave and add more time until they get cooked through.
It’s not necessary to turn your potatoes over during the cooking time, but it can be helpful for cooking larger potatoes.
3. When the time is up, get a towel or oven mitt and gently squeeze the sides of the potato. If it “gives without resistance and starts to open up”, it’s ready.
However, if it still seems “a bit firm”, microwave for another minute at a time until tender.
4. The final step is to just cut open the potato, and add your toppings, whether that be just butter, grated cheese or baked bean – there are so many options.
