Weight loss can be tricky to succeed with and many slimmers can easily become frustrated when changes aren’t seen. A nutritionist has explained that one error dieters make is not educating themselves properly. Foods that are high in fat might be mistakenly consumed and therefore derail progress.
Expert Signe Svanfeldt at healthy living app Lifesum said that it’s key to properly read nutrition labels.
This way you won’t eat foods or drink beverages that are not as healthy as you might think.
“When choosing to lose weight, calories are highly important, as you need to be on an energy deficit,” the nutritionist said.
“What’s also important is that the food you consume should have high nutritional value – meaning a high content of dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals – but also protein, healthy fats, carbs and a low amount of added sugar, sodium and saturated fat.

“You’re probably aware of that lot of highly processed foods, like pastries, luncheon meats, and cookies, have a high amount of energy, saturated fats, sodium and added sugars.
“But there are many other unexpected foods rich in those too, like ready meals, crackers and drinks.
“So learn how to read nutritional labels to raise your awareness and be able to choose nutritious foods.”
Another top tip from Signe is to have the right focus when you set off on your slimming journey.
This can make it easier in the long run to shed the pounds.
“You should focus on why you want to lose weight, and not only the actual weight loss and the number on the scale,” the expert said.
“Are you in need of weight loss in order to become healthier, to feel better, get more energised, being able to play with your kids or because you want to live a longer life?
“Shifting your focus from the weight loss itself to the reason behind it will make it easier for you to achieve your goal – and doing it in a healthy way.”
Dieters should also make the most of the tools available to help them achieve their ideal weight.
Technology can be your friend when trying to shape up.

Lastly, it’s worth making sure you’re not doing too much exercise as, surprising though it might sound, doing too much might be no help at all.

“Regular physical activity is great, but there’s no point in overdoing it in order to lose weight.”
Instead, those looking to weight should make sure their eating habits are as healthy as possible.
“Nutrition is number one when it comes to losing weight,” the expert added.
