Weight loss diet: New plan ‘gold standard’ of slimming methods – lose a stone in 6 months

A weight loss diet plan has been claimed by scientists to be the “gold standard” of plans after the average dieter lost a stone in six months on the plan. The Opt-IN plan is remote, ideal, scientists note, for a post coronavirus world.

The findings, from Northwestern University in the US, claim a diet plan called Opt-IN provides a very high standard of weight loss given it low cost, low hassle approach.

Senior study author Bonnie Spring, director of the Institute for Public Health and Medicine’s Center for Behavior and Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine said: “This matches the gold standard, so it’s as good as it gets.

“What’s novel is how participants get there.”

The method involves online lessons, goals and a customer designed app.

The app helps dieters count calories in food and track their progress.

It then sends the details to a coach, keeping dieters accountable.

The Opt-IN method is available in the US and costs $427 or £335.

Average weight loss of those on the programme is 13.4 pounds in six months, and over half of those included in the test lost seven percent of their body weight.

A cheaper option from Opt-IN still saw good results. Those on this plan, which costs $324 or £255, saw an average weight loss of 11.5 pounds.

Bonnie Spring went on: “We hope our study helps to convince payers to cover, employers to offer and individuals to engage in preventive care.”

Another weight loss diet plan often credit for slimming down in the Mediterranean diet. 

Healthline says: “The Mediterranean diet encourages eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods and limits processed foods and added sugars, which are often high in calories.

“For this reason, pairing the Mediterranean diet with a healthy lifestyle could promote weight loss.”

The diet encourages eating olive oil, legumes and beans, fish and red wine.

It was devised based on the dietary habits observed in the Mediterranean.

It also usually involves eating a smaller amount of meat and dairy goods and the diet has been linked with good health, weight loss and a healthier heart.

Another hugely popular diet tip is taking apple cider vinegar. 

Apple cider vinegar weight loss benefits have been found in numerous studies.

However, an expert claims the drink is actually “unlikely to be effective.”

One study found taking apple cider vinegar with one meal a day caused participants to eat 200 to 275 less calories.
