If a person is looking to get rid of their stubborn belly fat, Dr Michael Mosley provided one simple solution – cut out one particular food entirely. But it’s a food item many people associated with good health and a balanced diet – fruit.
To people’s surprise, Dr Mosley advised removing the healthy snack and fruit juices from a person’s diet in order to shift fat fast.
He explained it’s all to do with a person’s insulin levels but he noted as they age, their cell-wall insulin receptors become “less sensitive”.
“As a result, even after a meal, our blood is replete with glucose and fatty acids,” he said.
“This is a toxic brew, driving an array of bad outcomes, including rapidly-expanding belly fat.”
So in order to get rid of belly fat once and for all, cutting out sugar spikes is “key”.
“A surprising number of ‘diet’ snacks and drinks are high in sugar, and are marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat,” he explained.
Unfortunately, this means people should cut out seemingly-healthy drinks such as fruit juices and smoothies, as well as whole fruits like mango and pineapple.
All fruit juice, whether it’s apple, orange, grape or a fancy blend is high in sugar and is also likely to be high in carbs.

These can all cause sugar spikes but Dr Mosley reassured: “Two things will surprise you – the amount of sugar you were consuming [without realising] and the speed at which your belly fat will begin to tame itself.”
Fruit juice contains just as much as the average full-fat fizzy drink, with an 8oz serving of juice and cola both containing around 30g of sugar.
That works out to almost eight teaspoons in just one drink.
Dr Mosley’s own dieting methods promote ketosis – a process that happens when the body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy, so it burns fat instead.
According to Healthline, fruit juice is “inappropriate” for the Keto diet.
But there are a few exceptions including lemon and lime juices, which are low in carbs but full of flavour.
A blend of apple, spinach, kale, and collard with lemon juice has around 25 grams of carbs per serving, which is more than the total daily carb limit for the keto diet.
It is worth noting that while added sugars (found in processed foods and fizzy drinks) are bad news, sugar from whole fruit is considered natural sugar.
On the nutritionist’s Fast 800 plan, all meals have been carefully designed to ensure people consume at least 50g of protein and around 20g or fewer carbohydrates.
Dr Mosley revealed cutting carbs is also “vital” to losing weight.
He said: “When people cut carbs, their appetite goes down and they lose weight.
“Replace processed carbs like white bread, chips, and pasta with slow-release energy sources, such as brown rice or quinoa.”
