Penny Lancaster took to Instagram stories yesterday to reveal her staggering weight loss. The photos showed a before and after picture of herself in a bra and jeans just eight weeks apart. The dramatic difference has fans wondering… how did Penny lose 17lbs in eight weeks?

Penny, 49, opened up about her battle with weight gain during lockdown on Instagram on Wednesday.

She said she found herself comfort eating and indulging in drink during her time at home due to “anxiety and fear”.

On top of this emotional eating, she entered the menopause and as a result gained more than a stone.

The photos shared on Instagram by Penny show a much flatter stomach.

So how did she lose four inches from her waistline?

Penny recently told the Loose Women panel of her struggles with menopause.

The mood swings became so severe that she even threw a meal across the room.

The mum-of-two said: “I was in the kitchen, it had been one of those days where everything had been going wrong.

“I ended up throwing the dinner across the kitchen. I just screamed and burst into tears. The boys came and hugged me.”

Penny attributes her weight gain to the impact of lockdown as well as the menopause.

She told Loose Women: “I’ve been having the really hot sweats, and then freezing cold.

“My body temperature is fluctuating all over the place. It affects your mood swings, I’ve been putting on more weight.”

On the weight loss pictures, Penny wrote: “During the lockdown I found myself entering my menopause and the side effects were exaggerated by the anxiety and fear for the virus and the unknown.

“I turned to food and drink as comfort and gained over a stone.”

The Loose Women star said she managed to lose the weight by photographing herself.

She explained: “As a wake up call I shamed myself by taking a photo.”

That’s right, Penny lost an average of eight and a half pounds a month after taking one photo of herself.

That works out to be around two pounds a week, and that’s totally doable.

The NHS website says losing between a pound and two pounds a week is safe.

Penny said: “It worked and with a new diet and exercise, I lost 17 lbs and four inches off my waist in 8 weeks!”

You don’t need to shame yourself to encourage weight loss, but a photo may help you to track your progress.

If you’re overweight and wish to lose weight, the NHS has a free 12-week diet and exercise plan.

The plan is designed to help you lose weight at a safe rate of 0.5kg to 1kg (1lb to 2lb) each week by sticking to a daily calorie allowance.

For most men, this means sticking to a calorie limit of no more than 1,900kcal a day, and 1,400kcal for most women.
