For people wanting to lose weight fast, a number of studies have found that cutting down on all carbs is an “effective way” to shed pounds. But Dr Michael Mosley wants the results will only last short-term, and people wanting sustainable weight loss must try a different method.
He explained: “The same goes for low-fat dieters who eat lots of refined carbs.
“But those who eat a balanced, Mediterranean-style diet lose weight and keep it off, according to research. They also benefit from lower ‘bad’ cholesterol and blood sugar levels.”
The diet guru suggested opting for a low-fat or a Mediterranean diet over a very low-carb diet particularly when it comes to long-term benefits.
“I think the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of the latter,” he explained.
“If you want to lose weight fast or get your blood sugars under better control, then your best approach may be to start off with a low-calorie, low-carb Med-style diet until you have achieved your goals.
“Then you can add in more grains and fibre for the long-term benefits this will bring to your microbiome and therefore to you.”
If following the Mediterranean diet, people can expect to eat the following:
Protein – Beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, chicken, fish, seafood, eggs, red and cured meat is to be eaten rarely
Oil and fat – Extra-virgin olive oil, avocados and avocado oil, olives, canola oil
Nuts and seeds – Almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews

Grains – Whole-grain bread, whole grains, oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, couscous, whole-grain crackers, polenta, all-bran cereals
Dairy – Plain Greek yogurt, plain ricotta and cottage cheese, milk, cheese (brie, feta, or goat cheese)
Sweeteners – Honey, small amount of added sugar in coffee or tea
Condiments and sauces – Tomato sauce (no sugar added), pesto, balsamic vinegar, aioli, tahini, tzatziki
Drinks – Water, coffee, tea, red wine can be drunk occasionally
Herbs and spices – All dried herbs and spices, all fresh herbs, garlic, salt
