Dr Michael Mosley often shares his weight loss tips with slimmers online as well as on television. He is the creator of The Fast 800 – a diet plan that helps people lose weight quickly.
Although Dr Mosley stressed that losing weight quickly is not for everyone, he explained that it is one of the best ways to lose weight as slimmers are more likely to stick to their diet until they reach their target weight.
One of the biggest myths surrounding weight loss, according to Dr Mosley, is the belief that if you lose weight fast then you will put it on even faster.
But is this true?
The doctor continued: “In a recent review article titled ‘Myths, Presumptions and Facts about Obesity’ in the prestigious medical journal, The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers put this claim firmly into the ‘myths’ category.
“After looking at numerous studies which have compared rapid with slow and steady weight loss, they concluded that you would do better to lose it quickly rather than slowly.
“A recent Australian study backs up these claims.
“Researchers took 200 obese volunteers and put half of them on a low calorie diet for 12 weeks.
“The other half were asked to cut their calories by 500 a day. They were asked to do this for 36 weeks.”

A low calorie diet consists of 800 calories a day, which is what Dr Mosley recommends slimmers do when following his The Fast 800 programme.
Referring to the Australian study, the doctor continued: “There was a very high drop-out rate among the steady dieters: less than half made it to the end of the 36 weeks.
“Most said they gave up because they were frustrated by the slow rate of progress.
“By comparison, more than 80 percent of those in the rapid weight loss programme stuck to it.
“They were then followed for three years. Although both groups put some weight back on, the amounts were similar.”
Katrina Purcell, a dietician who led the study, added: “Our results show that achieving a weight loss target is more likely, and drop-out is lower, if losing weight is done quickly.”
When it comes to weight loss, there are different parts of the body that slimmers can target.
According to Dr Mosley, “belly fat is the most important fat to target and yes, it is possible to reduce it”.
He said: “Even the slimmest of people can suffer with belly fat and often, the abdomen is one of the most dangerous places to store fat.
“As if this were not bad enough, fat cells deep in your abdomen – also known as ‘visceral fat’ – are reluctant to let go of their energy-stash.
“To find the extra energy needed to fuel a small energy deficit, or a standard gym session, your body will look to other reserves first, like your glutes.
“Fortunately, recent breakthroughs in medical and sports science have shown that it is possible to throw this gradient into reverse: you can lose belly fat, and you can lose it fast.”
One of the “key” things you can do to lose belly fat is to cut out sugar spikes, said Dr Mosley.
He explained: “A surprising number of ‘diet’ snacks and drinks are high in sugar and are marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat.”
The doctor recommended limiting your intake of any food or drink containing more than five percent sugar, including sweet fruits and sugary smoothies and juices.
