Dr Michael Mosley often shares his weight loss tips with slimmers online as well as on television. He is the creator of The Fast 800 – a diet plan that helps people lose weight quickly.

As January looms, it is worth for slimmers to inform themselves of the truth about dieting.

Dr Mosley has shared a popular “myth” when it comes to losing weight.

He said: “Let’s get one of the most persistent myths out of the way first – that exercise is a good way to burn calories.

“This is one of the oldest and saddest myths around.

“Sad because it isn’t true.

“The problem is that thanks to our evolutionary past, when food was scarce and our ancestors were active, our bodies are incredibly efficient at doing things like walking or running.

“You have to do a lot of either to burn even a small number of calories.”

To give an example of this, the doctor went on to explain his time at Loughborough University, where he found out “just how many calories I burn while running”.

He said: “I wore special monitoring equipment and set off at a brisk pace round the track.

“I wasn’t exactly threatening any Olympic records, but I was going fast enough to feel relieved when, after 10 minutes, I was told I could stop.

“It turns out I had consumed around 16 calories a minute, which meant that having run just over a mile I had burnt through a grand total of 160 calories.

“Not bad, I thought. But put it in perspective.

“A small bar of chocolate contains about 240 calories, while a chocolate muffin comes in around 500 calories.

“So, if you decide to have a muffin and a medium latte, which is 150 calories, after your run then you are topping yourself up with 650 calories.”

Dr Mosley therefore concluded that while exercise is beneficial for overall general health, “it shouldn’t be substituted for healthy eating – they need to go hand in hand”.

“So, go for that run, but leave the muffin alone.”

If slimmers are to do exercise to keep fit and stay active, Dr Mosley recommending doing some workouts at home.

“Consistent exercise is integral to long-term metabolic health and here you’ll see just how easily it can be done without using expensive equipment or going to the gym,” he said.

The nutrition expert is here referring to The Fast 800 diet plan, which lists fitness activities slimmers can undertake.

Dr Mosley continued: “New research shows by leading a physically active lifestyle, we may be less likely to contract contagious and non-contagious diseases.

“So, regular exercise may just bolster your immune system on top of its more obvious benefits of fitness and strength.

“It’s important to incorporate a combination of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and resistance exercise into your lifestyle, as is set out for you as a member of our 12-week online programme, because studies have shown this combination, alongside incidental exercise, leads to weight loss and positive health outcomes.

“When spending extended time at home, it’s easy to lose structure in your day and ultimately fall off track, however, exercise is a great way to get you feeling productive.

“Plus, starting a routine in the comfort of your home will help to reset your relationship with exercise.”
