James Martin reportedly lost five stone in just two months. He credited his stint on Strictly Coem Dancing for this, but also made easy changes to his diet and lifestyle.

James Martin has opened up about his weight in the past, admitting it has been a struggle because of how “big” he is built.

But, with changes to his diet and an increase in his exercise uptake, he has managed to slim down.

The chef continues to follow a healthy diet and regularly goes for walks to stay active.

Fans of his will know this as he often posts images of his dog on Instagram, demonstrating he enjoys taking him for walks around his home in rural Hampshire.

But James first lost weight when he competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005.

Like many celebrities who go on the talent show, James shed the pounds without realising.

At the time, the chef unveiled he had lost a stone in just a week.

Thanks to the rigorous training regime, James had lost a huge five months by the time he left the competition – after only two months.

To maintain his ideal weight and lose a few pounds again, James reportedly started eating more healthily.

He focused on his diet, telling Mail Online: “I’ve really got to watch what I eat and drink, and make sure I exercise regularly.”

The chef reportedly reduced the amount of fats he ate, including butter.

However, James continued to cook with the ingredient and has revealed in the past that he does not think the condiment is to blame for people’s weight struggles.

In an interview with The Herald in November 2021, James said: “It’s not the butter consumption.

“It’s the ready-made food, it’s the packet food, the hidden salt, hidden fat – that’s the problem in this country.

“It’s not the butter in a butter block, or butter you put on your toast.

“It’s the fact that not as many people cook in the UK as they do in France or Italy or Spain.”

The chef added that putting enough butter on toast is important to him, saying: “I can’t do butter if it’s not visual on hot toast.

“I can’t eat it – it’s got to be enough butter to make it still visual.”

Speaking about his health in general, James went on to say that he has a check-up for heart disease every six months, due to his family’s history of it.

He said: “I’m fine. It’s everything in moderation.

“I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. So, there you go.

“If you complain about me putting butter on my bread, then stop bloody smoking or stop drinking.”

James has even written a book all about his favourite ingredient, entitled Butter: Comforting, Delicious, Versatile – Over 130 Recipes Celebrating Butter.

The chef, therefore, eats and cooks with butter as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

In 2018, James shed a few pounds again after noticing he had put on a little of the weight he had previously lost.

He started to notice his appearance change when he watched himself on the small screen.

When speaking to Mail Online, he added: “I just think it’s a lifestyle thing and also looking at yourself on TV.

“Before you used to watch TV on a small one and now they’re massive.”
