Marks and Spencer has launched three new cake jars including a Colin the Caterpillar flavour, trillionaire’s flavour as well as a raspberry ripple one. However, the arrival of the new food product divided M&S shoppers on Twitter.

The reusable and fully recyclable jar of cake costs £4 and is available to pick up right now.

The Colin the Caterpillar Cake Jar consists of rich chocolate sponge, Belgian chocolate sauce, chocolate ganache, milk and white chocolate chips and finished with a Colin the Caterpillar white chocolate face.

Raspberry ripple cake jar contains layers of madeira sponge, sweet raspberry jam, creamy vanilla buttercream and freeze-dried raspberry pieces.

The last cake jar is M&S’ trillionaire’s flavour which consists of layers of madeira sponge with salted caramel sauce, chocolate ganache, milk chocolate shortcake balls and fudge pieces.

Natalie Tate, Lead Product Developer for M&S cakes, said: “These cake jars are absolutely delicious and perfect for picnics, lunches on the go – or pretty much whenever you need a sweet fix.

“Gone are the days of picking a cake to suit all tastes – you can now mix and match to suit everyone.

“Much like an indulgent ice cream tub – there is something about diving straight in with a spoon that make the experience all the more delicious.

“I love the Trillionaire’s, it is the ultimate indulgent, chocolatey caramel goodness – a must try! But of course, all are delicious.”

Announcing the news on Instagram, M&S’ post reached more than 25,000 likes within a few hours.

The cake jars were welcomed by many customers, although others were left annoyed over the price.

One person said: “This is going to make picnics so much easier, wow, they look so good.”

Another wrote: “I would love these, single portion is good too.”

“Think I will be heading to store to buy these this weekend,” a third commented.

However, some were left confused as to why the packaging was plastic and why they were so expensive.

One M&S shopper said: “I know it says it’s recyclable but let’s be honest, if you’re on a picnic, it’s going straight in the general bin.”

Another asked: “Why are they so expensive, you can get a whole cake for only £3 more.”

“These are essentially offcuts, that’s way too much money,” a third wrote.

The retailer also recently launched Colin the Caterpillar cupcakes, adding yet another option to the growing Colin family.

The new cupcakes are packed with chocolate sponge, chocolate ganache and topped with rich buttercream, sprinkles as well as a mini Colin the Caterpillar face.

Posting on Instagram, Marks and Spencer said: “This just in: Colin the Caterpillar cupcakes!

“Have your favourite birthday cake all to yourself (or share, as they come in a pack of six) – chocolate cupcakes topped with rich chocolate buttercream, topped with sprinkles and a mini white chocolate Colin face.”

The post gained more than 10,000 likes in just four hours with fans expressing their excitement for the cupcakes.

One shopper said: “Could Colin’s get any better? And now there are cupcakes.”

Another wrote: “These cupcakes are game changing.”
